Both..

Mindfulness is an innate nature, we were born with presence. At your moment of birth, you had nothing but presence, you were in this world and as you grew one year, two years, whatever, you still only had presence. You didn’t have a sense of me, an identity, you were just present, you were engaged in the world. We’ve all seen babies cry and while the water is still running from their eyes, they are actually smiling because the moment has passed. They are now in a happier moment. Look at young children playing. They don’t really have a worry in the world. They are fully connected with this moment.

As we get older, we lose this present moment focus and start focusing on the future. Move from living in our bodies to living in our minds. We’ve forgotten about our five senses, we’ve forgotten we’ve got a body. The only time we know we have a body is when it aches or pains or doesn’t let us do something.

Mindfulness is about getting back to our original nature, but because we have forgotten what it is, we need a practice to help us re-learn what we have forgotten.
